She's texting me about something a little interesting and then mentions a weird thing happening at Starbucks.

Me: the people of Starbucks... Her: We should make a movie Me: ...... what kind of movie (;

Set the tone for the conversation

Her: Omg haha Her: You make everything sexual!

Suddenly this is self-aware. What do I do?! Agree and escalate/make a joke out of it.

Me: oh yeah you'd better believe it. Me: I even feel bad for my teachers, my family, my friends — they'll be talking to me about biology or whatever, and then here's ME making EVERYTHING sexual

Question: Would there have been better ways to do this?

Her: So you feel bad for me Me: nah. I'd say we're about equal Her: Lies!!! You are so much worse!! Hahah Me: so much better** haha Her: Hahaha NO Me: sexuality isn't something to be locked away... it's for us to enjoy

even going for "us" was a mistake; it's now's not the time for philosophy. She lets me know:

Her: Ok haha Me: correct me if I'm wrong Her: You're not haha you're just funny Me: JUST funny? Her: Haha yes Me: phew! You had me worried you thought of me sexually for a second there.

It was going the wrong way. Agree, escalate, make a joke out of it!

Then change subjects! Don't drive her to the point of saying "Haha ok we're done with this joke." Stop texting soon afterwards. Her semi-daily reminder of how fun you are has been fulfilled.

As a rule of thumb, I prefer to not text, but when you must, remember: Texting is meant entirely to be fun and lighthearted when and if you do it. She's looking to pick up the phone and laugh, not to read! Also, don't put a whole lot of effort into it once you get the mentality down; texting is a convenience thing, not a mental gymnastics exercise.
