Noo, don't do that!! That's a bad move, I think. You have to be more proactive! Now that you've talked, the door is open - you can just say hi again strike up a casual conversation about food or something. Or if you don't see her irl that often, add her on Facebook, chat a bit and ask her out ;-).

Ya don’t listen to him dude. Listen, just next time your in class just go up to her with a smile on your face. “Fancy seeing you here” or something along those lines. Be like “I like your vibe, we should grab food sometime” and give her your number.
See the truth is is if you don’t present well and say it with confidence and like you mean it it might not work. Unfortunately shit happens, but if it doesn’t workout re-evaluate what you could have done diff. Tone of voice. Posture. Care free. etc are all things you can tweak.
I’ve used this to help me overcome my shyness and have had success. Just go for it. Better to live a life of atleast I tried and now I know than what if.

Is it just me or giving girls numbers is a meh move? Then women have to be the ones initiating the conversation later, and that rarely happens. Asking for her contacts is much better.

See that’s where I used to mess up as well. I would watch endless videos on WHAT to say rather than HOW I said it. Girls notice the small details while your talking to her. Just be confident in yourself. It’s harder at 8am but maybe wake up earlier, workout, listen to some music and assure yourself you are the man.
In short, just ask for her number and try to set up a date shortly after. Not too much contact. I won’t tell you exactly what to say. You need to grow by trial and error or you’ll never learn

I would say, walk up to her with a smile when she's alone - immediately after class or during a break? Think of the first thing you'll say, maybe refer to what you talked in the past, or a topic that concerns you both in school but isn't super boring.
And as conversation naturally draws to a close, say you'd like to take her out for coffee or something, and if she says she'd love to, ask for her number/facebook/myspace/whatever :D.
