Firs time posting on this subreddit so I hope I'm doing the right thing. Just to preface, I am a guy who has vitiligo on my eye(I usually cover it up with really long hair) and has some insecurity issues regarding it. But I've been working on it. I'm a pretty conversational and funny guy and I've dated two girls in the past( tho I ended both cuz we weren't connecting right) One of my friends, let's call him Isaac, is sort of hooking up with a girl, Ava, from a different high school. Isaac asks this girl if she has four friends because he is trying to find me and these other friends some dates for prom. Luckily, she does have four friends willing to go to prom with us. However, you can tell that these girls are way out of our leagues. They are beautiful, big party people, and it seems they are pretty popular at their school.
I make the suggestion that we meet up to hang out before prom just like to get to know each other. We all meet up at a diner and Ava and Isaac are pretty talkative because they are trying to get the all 8 of us to connect. However, it gets off on a weird foot because the girls ask which pre party we are going to. I respond that it is complicated because my ex girlfriend is going to the one we are supposed to be going to so we are trying to find another one. They then start questioning me about my dating history. I prob should have tried to redirect the conversation but I ended up ranting about it and the girl I'm supposed to be going to prom with jokingly calls me a man whore because I dated girls that my friends had dated before. Then the conversation asks about what Im doing in the summer. I said I'm going to Spain for my senior trip with the rest of my friends at the table. The girls then call us spoiled because they don't get to do anything like that, even tho I'm pretty sure they're richer than us but whatever. We then go back to one of their houses just to go chill out and hang, but it ends up being Ava talking to us guys and the rest of her friends just sitting on their phones and having their own side conversations.
The guys start having their own side conversations after that and then they criticize us for having our own side convos and not talking to them. And also criticize us for being on our phones to talk to other girls. At that point, I'm just silent cuz I don't know what to say. It wasn't like an accusatory way they said it, more jokingly, but like still. Eventually we leave and Ava is like "Oh we should all hang out again" and the rest of her friends say "oh maybe, idk." I think Ava is trying to meet up again next weekend and in more of a party setting with beer and pong(so maybe this'll reduce the tension?) To be clear, I'm not looking to hook up with them I just want to connect with my date and the rest of them but I feel like they were pretty dry. Maybe they think the aloof persona is cool or smith? I have a feeling they are just using us for another excuse for a "prom experience." Is there anything I can do differently to connect with my date, especially in a group setting environment with the 8 of us again. I don't wanna show up to prom with a random girl idk and us not talk because then it'll be like super awkward. Or should I just give up on the whole notion. TLDR: Should've kept my trap shut in front of a group of girls who are pretty dry and disinterested in us. What do I do next time?
