I'm by no means any expert, hell, I'm just getting into PUA, but I've felt a similar illusion while out with friends and talking with girls: it feels easier. Here's what my theory is:

Your friends are your friends for a number of reasons, but if you boil them all down (charachter, not cannibalism) you'll find they all share common traits: they're supportive, they're encouraging, they have a positive energy. You feel relaxed, more open around them, and all that together is a surge to confidence. Would you feel this way around your parents? Odds are if you have mine, no, odds are if they're not, still no. When you have people who reinforce negativity, self doubt or bring down your confidence level you're going to be more closed off because you know what sort of magnifying glass you're under. Flip the tables back to your friends: you're relaxed, you're confident, you're willing to be open and to take risks.

That's funny, I have the opposite. My friends are not at all into pickup so I feel weird doing it when I'm with them.
