I'm in the same boat. A simple tactic has worked for me a couple times. It requires an understanding friend/wingman who knows what's up to be present:

Mention to your friend that girl over there has been eyeing you, which is his cue to say some motivational thing like "well go fucking talk to her" and physically (but subtlety) push/nudge you towards her.

The physical push really works for me. Wingmen take note to try this for your AA-challenged friends.
