“Hey” or “Hi” work pretty well. I’m pretty direct with my openers, I usually say something to the effect of “I thought you were pretty and I wanted to introduce myself.”

Sweet.
My approach is natural. Most people on this subreddit would tell you to walk up to a girl and introduce yourself. To me it seems scripted. Instead I introduce myself into their life naturally. Say for example you're in a gym and you see a girl there that you like. I would approach her and say "would you mind watching my bag while I run to my car?" Of course she would say yes. The added benefit is that people are more likely to agree to big things - like a date - if they have already done small favours for you. It also builds rapport because she will assume you immediately trust her.
When I return I then introduce myself to her as a courtesy. "Thanks so much, my name is Herman by the way"and then the usual -- she tells you her name and now you're acquainted.
I want her to go away thinking that she met me spontaneously and one thing lead to another.
