Smile, maintain eye contact with your target, and be that confident motherfucker who does shit like this all the time without thinking twice because you're fucking amazing and that girl is beyond lucky that YOU chose to improve her day by talking to her. Exude that confidence during the interaction and her friends will tell her that she better go out with you.

You don't need to separate her. "Hi, I'm matt and I wanted to tell you that you look amazing today. I would love the chance to take you to dinner this weekend. Are you free? "

If you really don't feel comfortable asking in front of her friends, interrupt the group with "Excuse me. Can I talk to you over here for a second? " and motion away from the group. A tree or a sign post is good. Be prepared for "Who are you? " and "Um, No" responses. For me it's "My name is Hanz. Don't worry I just need a minute. Nothing bad at all actually. Please?". The No's usually get a "Alright. I had to ask. " and walk away.

Talk the the group.

You probably aren't going to be able to isolate and get a number cold in this setting. It's going to be painfully obvious, and turn them all off.

It's college, you'll see them again. Talk the them all, get to know them all, invite them all to a party in your dorm, etc. Then you can get to know one better.
