Honestly, to people who don't know you well, you probably come off like a dick. I know because I used to be the same way, until one of my friends basically straight up told me that a lot of people didn't like me because they thought my sense of humor was too "abrasive". A lot of it was either sarcastic or negative comments, which were meant to be taken lightly, but nobody really picked up on it.

The key is just to really be careful with what you say. When you have that snap urge to say something "snarky", just don't. There's no real reason to say it. It doesn't add anything to the conversation. Just keep it to yourself. Especially, if it's about something in your group. I'm a little more snarky when it comes to outsiders. Just this weekend I started a conversation in a bar with a girl about how terrible someone else's sweater was. It was a funny little in-joke between us. Had I told her her sweater was terrible, I would've been an asshole.

Honestly though, the main portion of your humor should not derive from tearing other people down. It just demonstrates that you lack confidence in yourself. If you're constantly trying to take people down a notch, it seems like you're suffering from some serious kind of inferiority complex and you are always trying to impress people with how much cooler you are than them. Confidence is not only being aware of who you are and unbothered by it, but also being aware of who other people are and not threatened by them.

I too, suffer from this problem. I come off as a dick easily to the uninitiated.

I have two different strategies to solve this.

Ease into my humor, a joke at a time to see what kind of response I get.
Shock and awe, like jumping into a pool to get accustomed to the water.

Honestly I don't care, if you don't appreciate my sense of humor, that's fine. I think as long as I'm doing it in fun, most people appreciate it.
