I've recently dipped my toes into online game to supplement my night game. A few things I've learned (and I've gotten pretty good at it).
(1) Like in normal situations, women almost NEVER approach you/your profile first (I've gotten them to do it, which I'll explain later).
(2) Most women WILL NOT respond to most messages, mainly because they have tons of guys sending them "wanna fuck" messages or cockshots.
(3) Because of (2) above, even a bland "Hi, I liked your profile" will get you nowhere.
(4) You really should have your picture on your profile. No shirtless shots. Evidently, research suggests that women respond better with you not looking directly into the camera. No pictures with other women pawing all over you either.
(5) The way to lure them in is two ways, which work in tandem. First, your profile MUST be unique. It has to stand out from all the others. It has to be interesting, funny, flirty, truthful, and hit many emotional spikes. I'll explain mine in a minute. Second, your first message to them also has to be unique, goofy, attention grabbing (and I'll explain this below too). You have to hook them in with your first message and then they will read your profile and laugh, blush, and tingle. That's your job, if you want any responses.
(6) My profile. I start off with a caricature of what they think the worst or even average guy online is. "I'm a homeless loser. I drink too much and steal from the basket at church." Just keep going on and on that way. Make it ridiculous. Hit every low point you can think of. Then, I finish with: Looking for a high quality, high income woman. Virgins to the front of the line.
That's the first half. Then pause and say, "I bet you think every guy on here is like that. I can beat that easy."
Then go on to describe yourself. You BETTER be interesting. If you have no interests or hobbies or job or whatever, well, forget it. You are a loser and the chicks with sniff it out quickly. Drop a joke here and there ("I help old ladies across the street on weekends", "The governor has me on speed dial (okay, I made those up)." Tell them about your "passions" (chick crack) and your goals (you have a life and pursuits). Don't brag, but learn how to drop subtle DHVs ("Life can be interesting and tough. Finding work after graduate school really tested my limits" ... here you a. have a job, b. have an education, c. can persevere in the face of adversity). Mention things you do that chicks like to do: dancing, live music, cooking food, etc.
Finish by describing what you want in a woman and describe those details all women like to think they possess: I like a woman who is smart, funny, and compassionate. She must have a mind of her own but also knows how to show off those feminine wiles all of us guys adore. Cussing, spitting, and bourdon drinking helpful too.
Shit like that.
(7) Your first message to her should throw her off her guard. It should be a message unlike she's ever received before. Here's what I do: Hi, I saw your profile. Your smile is alluring and your interests similar to mine. I can see a whirlwind romance, followed by many babies, traveling, and candle light dinners but descending into drama and acrimony. Many hurled insults and dishes later we'll go through a bitter divorce that leaves us both broken.
Then I end it with either: "I can't wait!" Or "It'll never work."
And leave it at that.
Your can change it around a bit, but you get the picture.
They will check out your profile. Not all will message back, but my rate of messaging has gone WAY up once they see my ridiculous beginning to my profile. And, I'm getting many non-ugly women messaging me first: "I loved your profile. I've never read anything like it. So funny!"
(8) Your response to them. Keep the game up. They love it. "Yeah, I know, I liked your profile too but I don't think we should communicate. I mean, the computers at the public library are not all that convenient and my parole officer won't let me use his computer. Worse, if we like each other too much I'm afraid we'll just ruin each other."
Sometimes I'll say, "We can never talk again."
Then add: Hi, I'm themoor
This shows you actually want to continue the interaction. They are fucking hooked brother.
Now, they will simply have to respond and play your game. You can keep it up a bit more, but calibrate because they now want to get to know you. Reveal bits about yourself, make jokes, get them revealing themselves.
But you don't want to do this too long (like for a week or more). A few hours / days are fine, but you need to get them to agree to a meet.
"Hey, this has been fun! We should meet for lunch, you know, something low key, low pressure. Here's my number: xxx-xxxx.
They will usually respond with their number. Get them to agree to a day/time/place.
WARNING (AND I'M NOT FUCKING KIDDING): If you are not naturally witty, funny, conversational, have life experiences, and so on, this technique WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU. You don't have the game for it yet. You gotta be ready to hold your own when communicating with women online. Establishing rapport and comfort online is TOUGH and they will not meet you if they feel you can talk the talk but not walk the walk. Use at your own discretion.
I'm banging one chick I met last week this way. I have four dates in the next four days with different women. I also have five more women I'm in contact with ready to set up a meet as well.
I started this approach on Monday last week (5 days ago).
Now that I've let the cat out of the bag, I probably ruined this method for myself.
I'll gladly accept donations at my pay pal account.
LATE EDIT/ADD ON: It is now 9 days since I've started this. Looking at the paper in front of me, I have 12 women I'm in contact with. I had 2 dates since Sunday, one this afternoon, one tomorrow, one Friday, and one Monday (out of town). All different women. 1 f-close so far, 2 k-closes. 4 flakes (no longer on the list of twelve). So, of the 12, I had dates / have dates with 6, and another six still in communication. They are often contact me first and after a few emails, they offer their phone number first. I've invented chick crack, evidently.

"no shirtless shots"
What if one of the things you enjoy is weightlifting and have the body to match? It doesn't make sense to hide something I'm really good at.
Granted, I'm not talking "look at my abs in my filthy bathroom mirror cell phone shot" but I see nothing wrong with taking one outside.

Yeah, man, you're moving way too fast. You're going from 0 to 100, firing the gun without loading a mag. The first girl you lost because you had secured a tenuous set of logistics and she was down to test the waters, but you flaked in a silly way by unwittingly double-booking yourself. She decides to pass.
Second girl, just too fast. Imagine you're at a speed dating conference, and the interaction goes like this: "Hi, how are you?" "Good, how about you?" "Good! Let's date!" What? Before you can secure logistics, you have to build rapport, an emotional/sexual connection--give her a reason to want to go on a date. Also, note that the flake rate on online dating sites is huge, and it's an entirely different ballgame.
Keep at it, and let me know how it goes.
Lesson learned.
Unfortunately, this is how you start, making mistakes and learning from those and never making those mistakes again.
