Biggest thing to take from this:

I wish I had read this last October before a very similar thing happened to me. Unfortunately, in my state of thinking how ridiculous she was being (which she was), I thought I could use logic to show her why she was being an idiot. Didn't work and only pushed her further away.
What I've learned in the past year is what OP is getting at. You can disqualify yourself in the shortterm just fine (as OP describes in the story), but at some point the girl may start viewing things as moving towards a relationship, which may freak her out. If she does freak out, OP's response is really your only course of action, and quite a good one at that.

it took a lot of self control. I was going to do the same thing, using logic. Saying something like, "sometimes you can decide when something good comes into your life..." or something along those lines. Anyways, glad I didn't. It all worked out anyhow.
