I honestly think that you don't have to worry about that in this very moment, you are making problems that you don't have yet, they will only interfer in your way of getting her. What I think is happening to you and happened to me is that you don't really fear losing her frienship, but losing the hope of being in a relationship with her. It may seem that hope is a good feeling but in the long term is toxic.
My story was exactly as you described yours, but I didn't take action and she ended dating other dude.

Lil update for ya: One of my friends spoke with her the other day, and it doesn't seem like right now is the time for me to get her. Although she says that she thinks that I'm an awesome guy and that she wants to start spending lots of time with me again. So I guess no darkness without a little light. Imma try to get her in the long haul though and it definitely seems possible.

Things are only as awkward as you make them. You're not responsible for how others feel especially about being awkward and they'll feed off you anyway if you dont let it bother you and not care neither will your class mates. Besides their too busy worrying about their own lives and crushes to care that much about your shit. Think about how you would act towards someone in your shoes if they got rejected theyll think "O that sucks" and move on with their lives and if they treat you different their not worthy to be your friends or acquaintances anyway.
