You were boring, or tried to set expectations. Either way, you gave her 0 intrigue, and didn't make her chase you. You messed up somewhere before she told you she hates men, but since I don't have the details, I can't tell you where. Realistically you were boring.

"That's cool, I understand what it's like."

That's exactly what I would expect a friend to say. You were accommodating her and lining up to be her bitch buddy. This is what you really said, "There is nothing intriguing about me, but since I like you, I'll take whatever shit you throw at me and hope you settle with me some day"

You didn't challenge her at all. Boring. You should have said something more confrontational and called her out, and turned it around on her. Not in a degrading way, but in a "Grow up, life happens, fuck worrying about it and have some fun" kind of way. Never validate negativity, that's what friends do.

She tells me that she just got out of a relationship and is a man hater right now.

"So you're going lesbian then? Give me a shout when you want babies, for you it'll be free of charge."

She doesn't want validation, because half of the problem is she feels like shit for feeling like shit. By validating her feeling like shit, you're invalidating her feeling like shit because she feels like shit. So meta, but if you understand what I mean, you'll understand why you never ever validate negativity from a girl. She knows she's dealing with a /firstworldproblem and you tried to validate it... Not very manly, confident, or in control.
