Hey guys, first post here.
I’m 5’9, so slightly below average. I live in a kinda tall area, so more than a few girls were taller than me. About 1 year ago, I barely noticed height, and how my friends usually were taller than me. Was I jealous? Perhaps slightly, but I barely cared about height. I wished I could be taller about as much as I wished I could have blonde hair and brag about how I was “Aryan” (joke), but not insecure at all.
Until I met this one girl. The height queen. A bit unusually tall for girls at 5’9, she told me straight up that height was the most attractive aspect about a guy. She’s said on numerous occasions she could never see herself going out with someone 5’10 or under. I even know great guys she’s rejected due to this.
We became friends and stuff, but this kinda always pissed me off about her. She knew I was also 5’9, so she joked about it. I suppose it made me a bit insecure, being told that I was basically undate-able to her (FYI, had a minor crush, couldn’t help it).
I always brushed it off (“I just see it as playing the dating game on hard mode, gotta keep it fair ya know?”) but still felt that I had this random, uncontrollable factor that limited the dating pool, especially with this girl in particular.
So what did I do? I said “fuck you” to the that height induced friendzone, and distanced myself from her. Months later, we started talking a bit again, and I joked about how “Oh yeah, I remember how I used to have a crush on you.”
And for some reason, that height obsession seemed to (temporarily) disappear. After I said that, she started flirting like crazy. I was honestly startled by this, remembering the whole “won’t date anyone under 5’10” thing, but hey I wasn’t bringing it back up.
So we started dating. Though it didn’t last very long, I think this is a good example. Even for women who think height is the most important thing, and talk about how they “laugh at guys under 6 ft”, I guess theres ways around that. Even though height “is the most attractive thing about a guy” (direct quote), and she couldn’t stand anyone under 5’10, I managed to slip by somehow.
Moral of the story (I think): heights only limiting if you let it. Though I don’t know what it was, something allowed me (confidence, distance maybe) to bypass that height limitation.
ALSO: I wouldn’t recommend dating those girls that insist on height or anything similar. While understandable, its really shallow and doesn’t go away. Even after we started dating, and I thought I was in the clear, she kept bringing height back up, like blaming it on me for her not being able to wear heels, saying that I’m “only 5’10” (for some reason she thought I grew an inch, idk I didn’t correct her).
