The point is, not everybody here is a confident person. they're learning how to build that confidence. Sure saying Hi can occasionally lead to a golden situational conversation that will light up her eyes, but It's just as likely to lead to the situation I described. If it does, you need to have some sort of backup plan. Unless you're experienced enough that you have a pool of conversational topics to grab at when she drops the ball. "just say hi" doesn't work.

Stop thinking of this as you're opener. this is small talk. It's fluff. you're opener is whatever you say Just after you say hi.
"nice weather, eh?"
"do you have the time?"
"is that a purple hippo behind you?"

Go out tomorrow. "just say hi" to 3 different girls. tell us what they said directly after that, and the first thing you said back to them directly after that. Chances are, that last one is going to be what new sedditors are going to want to hear.
