I was in the checkout lane today and there was a cute cashier behind the register. I came up with my Cliff bar and bagel.

[Cashier]: Is that all? [Me]: Yeah.

She proceeds to swipe my items. Two or three seconds pass.

[Me]: So how's it going?

She looks up at me, sees me with a shit-eating grin, smiles, and continues swiping my items.

[Cashier]: Pretty good! Just a little tired.

[Me]: Ah I feel you. I'm tired too.

She keeps smiling, finishes scanning my items, I pay, and wish her a good day. Ground-breaking shit, am I right?

It wasn't until after I was walking away when I thought of a better response. Instead of just saying "I'm tired too," I could have said, "I'm tired too, but at least we can be tired together." I might have missed my opportunity, but at least now I have a line ready for when I have another encounter like that.

That's when it hit me.

I never would have thought of another line or a different scenario if I hadn't said anything in the first place.

My interaction might have seemed short and insignificant to you guys, but to me, it was a learning experience. Seeing the cashier smiling when I asked about her felt great, and I also feel more prepared for when a situation like that happens again.

We can sit behind our screens all day and plan out the perfect conversation, but most of the time, it won't work out that way. The only way you can execute a perfect conversation is by practicing conversation. Even if it's small, it's still a small step forward. Get out there and start practicing!
