Or maybe I should call it - offensive (vs) defensive mindset?

Here's the one thing that keeps bugging me:

I try to avoid my dad at all times. He's high-value [bureaucrat turned politician] and I haven't done anything worthwhile in my life till now.

It feels like there's an invisible frame connecting me and my dad from where he keeps telling me that I'm not good enough [he never told anything nearly close to this in real life]

A few days ago, me & my friend visited another city to check out some colleges we were interested in. I wasn't expecting my dad to be home by the time I returned home but he was. I knew there was nothing I needed to hide from but as soon as my mom told me dad's home too, I came out of that home and got back to my room[which is in another flat side-by]. Why did I do that? If at all I had to encounter him, all I had to do was tell him the information I collected about the colleges and which one I'd like to join. But nope! I didn't want to have even that mini-interaction.

What's the root of this behavior of mine? Why do I want to avoid him so much? What's there in just telling him the details of college I wanted to join? Also, count those awkward silences in elevator + while driving.

Yes, this happens not just with my dad but others as well, as in, I would rather not have an encounter with some people than forcible saying "hi, how are you?" etc.

This question is not about me trying to connect with my dad. I want to know what's the root cause of me becoming such an escapist when I have to interact instead.

Also, I try to talk to him and face that awkwardness just for the sake of facing it and it hasn't gotten any better. I become comfy for a few days with him and again I fall back into the same avoid-mode.
