I am an introvert and poor at making random banter.

I am 99% sure that your problem is this: Learn to accept the awkward silence. There is no need to always fill it. We are not talkshow moderators, and even they leave their partner hanging time and time. And as you learn to do that, you will notice that your conversation partner will actually fill in those pauses more than often. It radiates confidence to actually NOT always get nervous and fill in every pause with saying literally ANYTHING.

It's not your obligation to keep the conversation running 24/7, which is also unnatural if you think about it. Learn to keep it cool and have more relaxed talks.

A quick solution that helped with me is staying in touch with the news, from world events to entertainment media, so there’s at least one topic of conversation you can pull out of your ass and talk about. A long term solution that helped me is being open to new experiences. Always be open to undergoing a new experience as it will shape you as a person and give you way more to talk about and show.

You can create some backup topics to elaborate, but from my experience I find it rather a poor idea, that may often also come totally incongruent with the current mood. Instead, use your feelings, look around, think about things that happened recently or will happen soon, and something should almost always come to your mind. Remember that brain works best when it is at ease, don't stress out to fill the silence, let it flow naturally if possible.
