For general clubs, its more about energy, fun, and confidence than being able to dance.

You can always tell the difference in the people out on a dance floor that are desperate and on the prowl and the people out there to just have fun. Women are going to find the latter more interesting. You can get away with a lot if you're just out there for fun. i.e. from pulling random females and twirling them to just starting full on dances off / dance circles.

People want to have fun, but most lack the confidence to just go out there and do something fun, not caring what people think about it. If you master this aspect, you're already a step ahead of the majority of people in a club.

Salsa and swing classes have a really high ROI (return on invesment).

It doesn't matter if you suck, others in the classes will also suck just as bad. Just have fun with it.
Its also not a bad place to meet new people.
You get away with salsa in many clubs as plenty of top 40 hits have a latin flavor to them these days.
Many women like to be turned whiled dancing.
Swing and Salsa can get you close to a woman without being a creep about it.

Personally, I still prefer hip hop styles like pop and locking as it works well with remixes and dubstep. If you can show off, its an easy way to start a dance circle and even have women coming up to you to ask you to show them how to dance or get complete swarmed by a whole of women.

It requires confidence in your moves. You can't half ass it. It can be learned on your own time if you the make time, have some mirrors around the house and a hardwood floor, and access to youtube.

Though if you're using videos to learn make sure they slow it down enough. There is difference in videos that show off what choreographers can do vs trying to get you to actually learn something.

look for videos on kick ball changes, heel toe, isolation, body roll, waves and go from there.

Hip hop classes for adults can be awkward depending on where you live. The "adult" classes for hip hop in smaller towns tends to be all teenagers.

Take a dance class if you want to get good at dancing.

Step out of your comfort zone and learn that you are in charge of how embarrassed you are of your actions. I wish I could say that you could simply just turn off embarrassment when you intend to have fun but it takes repeated steps of embarrassing yourself to realize that its a worthless emotional state to be in or allow to control you.

Get out there and dance to have fun, not to show off or impress anyone.

Dancing is entirely about having fun. A portion of it is definitely in your moves, but if you're having fun and enjoying yourself thats what makes you a good dancer
