In every mixed group, you should ask, "So, how do you all know each other?" Use that exact phrase. You should be able to determine who is a couple and who isn't. For example, sometimes girls will say a guy is their boyfriend, just as a shield. Ask the guy how long they've been a couple. If he hesitates, he's not her boyfriend.

If she's not with her boyfriend, she's fair game. If she's with her boyfriend, she's still fair game. Just don't try to one-up the boyfriend, or put him down, since that will naturally pull her closer to him, and she will defend him.

Assume if he's not anyone's boyfriend then every girl is fair game. It will be quickly obvious if he's into a specific girl in the group. If he's an AFC, it really doesn't matter. You should be able to pull the girl anyway, and he probably won't be able to do much about it. Still be friendly with the guy. You don't have to lower him to make yourself look better. An easy way to avoid competition is just to not game the girl he's after, anyway. But, if she's your target, don't let him discourage you.

If he's not a complete AFC, it may be a bit harder, but the same rules apply. Don't worry about him. The Game is 90% between you and the girl. Outside obstacles are generally minor distractions that can be handled with proper isolation and logistics.

As for you and the girl you're interested in, make sure you're telegraphing your intentions in a physical way. This lets everyone in the group know. If you're mad kinoing a girl persistently, not many guys will have the cajones to think they can pull her away. However, if you're just standing around chatting and not kinoing, they may think you're only making conversation and may start to make a move on your target.

Play it civil is definitely the best idea. One-upping can only get so discreet, and that and looking competitive (desperate) are two very easy ways to cause women to lose interest. It makes it look like you're threatened, and week. Do. Not. Be. Threatened. I find myself using any other men in the group to boost myself up. All guys try to make girls like them, but if you try to make the guys in the group like you too, you're going to look a lot better to everyone in the group. I'm not saying go out of your way to befriend them, i'm just saying play nice and make conversation. You'll look like you have the situation under control, and in the event that the other guy starts trying to one-up you or compete, you've pretty much eliminated him as a threat.
