FB is a good way to keep up with friends from back home/ girls you just met. One topic that has always helped me chat up are to bring up funny youtube videos. This is a great move too when you bring a girl back to get her comfortable (sitting on the couch together laptop in front of you - almost impossible to not make out at that point).
