Well done, it takes a lot to go out on your own. It WILL feel awkward at first, but stick with it. Anyway, here's a few criticisms

Sitting at the bar is the easiest way for people to spot you're alone. Try to force yourself to mingle through the club, chat to a bunch of people and just be comfortable with your surroundings

Don't make the focus about picking up girls. Just go along and have a good time. If you're having fun, the girls will pick up on it and be much more receptive to you.

If you get asked where your friends are, don't be afraid to tell them you're there alone. "I haven't spotted any of them yet, I just thought I'd see who's out"

Don't become a mosquito. Unless you're doing really well with one of them, wish them a good night and move on to the next group after 10-15 minutes. Don't approach the group again or hover around them hoping to catch an eye. They'll think its creepy.

No need to lie about your friends, man. Confidence. "Where are your friends?" "I'm not sure, probably sitting around at home, I felt like going out on my own tonight." I actually said this to a couple of people last weekend when I went out alone, it garners some respect. If you're doing something that PANICS most people, you're willing to own it completely, and you clearly aren't at all bothered by it, people will find it amazing.
