I believe that storytelling is an amazing ability. A good storyteller can entrance his listeners, having them clinging to every detail of even the most mundane topics. It's personal, interactive, imaginative. I've found that great storytellers naturally attract a good deal of attention to themselves and demonstrate high social worth.

Here are some simple tips for people who want to get better. If you feel that what I am saying wouldn't work for you, don't worry about it. There are many different ways to tell stories, this is simply mine:

  1. 90% of your story is the energy you put into it. If you lack the energy to tell a story, what makes you think people would want to listen?

  2. Pace your story- if you are telling it well enough, people will listen. Be comfortable telling your story, as you are almost never under any time constraints. Rushing through a story so that it finishes 10 seconds faster isn't helping anyone.

  3. Use colorful adjectives instead of everyday words when describing things. Exaggerate and use hyperbole, but use it carefully. Your listeners love unique stories, and its great when you throw in vivid details. But if you do it too much, exaggerating every tidbit, it can come off as just too ridiculous to care about.

  4. Your eyes can help you tell a story. To get idea of how this works, look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself the story of your day. Pay attention to what your eyes are showing, and notice that putting energy into your story really shows.

  5. Remember that although you know the full details of the story, the people listening to you don't. A good storyteller doesn't have to rewind to fill in a vital detail that was missed. Try to think of your story from a third-person perspective, even if the topic is about you.
