Suppose you take a girl out on a first date, say for drinks, and it went well. Do you pay for it? Ask her if she's splitting?
Personally, I generally casually pull out my credit card and put it on the check. If the girl shows any discomfort about it, I don't insist. I never make a big deal out of it either way.
The girls I tend to date are students. I, on the other hand, have a well-paying job, which generally comes up over the course of the date. I see it as just a nice thing to do, especially since the cost has literally no impact on me, but might make a difference to her.
From my experience, girls either don't react to it at all or are very vocal in thanking me (which I find odd). Only once did a girl stop me and tell me that, "if you let the guy pay, he'll expect something from you in return." Then she came over to my house and we had sex.
