Start of the year is the best time to get girls or get settled with a girl more than any other time of the year. I'm in college as well and from my experience if a girl is new she is going to end up dating one of the first guys she meets at college. The window of opportunity presents itself early and starts to shut before you have time to feel the breeze.

General college smalltalk people usually asks each other about their majors and where they are from. With the start of the year, for you this could lead to asking about their classes and if you happen to be in the same class as the girl you're talking to build the relationship. I say this because if you screw up with someone you're in a class with you'll just have an awkward rest of the semester (unless you have an auditorium class, then you can hit up half the women in class and not care).

I do a lot of daygaming in college and I'm also at times random and spontaneous in these instances, it all depends on how I perceive the girl at a glance and what would be the most receptive interaction. Say you're in the student cafeteria when you see a girl sitting alone. Already have something in your head that can draw out some conversation, maybe something about her, then ask if you can join her. Repeat the basic college questions I stated above (Even now I still meet people and our introductions always include school. It's what everyone's around for). This "lone girl" scenario works with any situation as a lot of girls will just sit around campus or something.

There are going to be a lot of different ways to meet girls and people in general. If you have money to spare (i.e. your parents can pay) I'd say join a fraternity. I am not in one but I dont have the monetary luxury and honestly never enough interest to think seriously of it. BUT, frats and sororities can work miracles. Doesn't matter how ugly or fat you are, if you're in a frat and try at least somewhat, you'll get laid and you'll get a girlfriend--thats the perks of being tied with sororities and those frat parties.

There are a number of ways to go about talking to girls and situations in which to do it around college. Lots of activities go on and with school starting there will be lots of parties to celebrate being back. Same actually. Going into 3rd year now and I've done fucking horribly. Need some pointers.

Join a few clubs. Game the cafeteria and bookstore and the campus itself including the grounds.
