I've been over this before, but I must reiterate: it doesn't matter how good of a conversationalist you are, it is meaningless if you do not close and ask for the date or the number.

I was just in a coffee shop when this HB 7 was approached by this guy. He seemed to have recognized her from somewhere. He asked her what book she was reading and it was a book about stocks. They then had one of the most solid and meaningful conversations about the stock market and current events. At the end of it they went back to what they were doing. A few minutes the girl got up to leave and the guy said it was lovely talking with you and nothing else. She reciprocated the gesture and left.

Practice the art of closing. Closing takes more courage than starting a conversation. Get rid of the fear of rejection and go for it. Otherwise your time and energy conversing are for nothing.
