Reposting because I had posted this late at night.
There is a three day fireworks show in Vancouver, BC. Last Saturday, Vietnam was showcased. Tonight, its Brazil. And this coming Saturday (the BC Day long weekend) it'll be Italy's turn.
I checked Facebook this morning for things to do. I was invited to a Mord Fustang (Estonian electronica) show at a club called Venue on the Granville Strip, where Donnelly Group cookie cutter bars reign. Before that, trivia night at an Australian themed pub. Now, since I know a lot about Australia, I decided to give trivia a shot. If all else fails, I'll get a dinner out of it.
5:00 pm: I leave the house, take the train to the area where I'm picking up the tickets. At the station, I was trying to loosen up and get into social mode by talking to people. But I was focusing on the hottest chicks and not talking to everyone, and of course you know people, they're texting or listening to music and look like they don't want to be disturbed (less so if they're only wearing headphones and idly looking out the window)
The tall girl with the gladiator shoes: Unreceptive, with polite nods and smiles. That shit terrifies me. At least make an effort to get into the conversation.
7:00 pm: So anyway, I get the tickets and go downtown. I get to the pub and make some Australian themed jokes with the staff and order dinner. As I soon realised, however, that trivia night is not something you do alone. I settled my bill and left.
So the only thing that would really get me into social mode slipped out of my grasp. By then it was 8, doors opened at nine. After milling around in the Downtown core for an hour I headed to the club.
Now, I did a few things right. I talked to people. I was high energy, with high fives and all that. But only with guys-I was hands off with girls. You see, I had a plan formulated in my mind, as a club newbie: find the coolest guys who look like they're well connected, hang around with them, make myself worthy, exchange numbers, get in the loop. At an electronica show, where the music is so loud you can't even think, this is a difficult accomplishment.
The other thing holding me back was that I didn't know what to talk about. At a bar, I can go on and on no problem. It's only at a noisy club that Whatnextitis comes into play.
Something I've noticed that has changed from my all ages club days of 2007-09. Whatever girls come in, are in cliques, in bubbles. They don't come out of those bubbles. The grindfests to hip hop and top 40 of 2008 are long gone. That's my specialty. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if girls were on X at the time. I didn't even bother to talk to groups of people on the edge of the dance floor.
I approach a girl. I dance by myself. She doesn't get any closer. She doesn't even notice me. She's off in her own little world. I get closer. She pulls away, or turns away, or to her girlfriend. Repeat ad nauseum.
The lights! The lighting system was strobe and combined with the music, it was nearly impossible to get around the dance floor.
Sometimes there's a circle. I try to go into the circle to dance (like the middle of the circle) and gently get pushed aside by a guy. That is the only thing that really hurt, that got to me, that discouraged me.
There were some successes. Some girls were receptive to my dancing. I managed to hook hands with one and even get her to lace them around my neck, but front to front grinding equalled a pullaway. They were totally out of it.
At about 12:10 am I finally left, feeling like the night was a total bust. I missed the fireworks and didn't get anything I wanted from the club. Maybe I should rewatch that Night Game Formula video...
TL;DR: I saw a Ferrari F40 in downtown today.
This is another call to Vancouver sedditors. Come out of the woodwork. I'm looking for people well versed in night game and day game to show me the ropes.
Edit: I was constantly going in and out of the club and made the mistake of dancing energetically early on; now my feet are killing me. Late start due to fireworks, it being a weekday and me leaving early all contributed to the bust. The main action was between 10:30 and midnight, when I left.
Edit 2: There was no Aussie trivia at Mooses Down Under (the name of the pub) that night. It was strictly a non-Aussie night for some reason.
