What is an "improv class"?

Improv is short for improvisation, where the goal is to perform a scene or skit on stage without any pre-planned script or guidance. The audience or instructor will throw out a topic like "ten strangers huddle in a ski chalet during a blizzard" then the performer's goal is to create a cohesive, funny scene. The main rule of improve is "Yes, and..." meaning if a fellow performer looks at you and says "Hey Thomas, help me carry this body" you have to say "Sure! I'll take the legs. Be careful for the sword sticking out of his chest." In normal conversation what it would mean is listening well, and picking up on any detail the other person said, and continuing the conversation by either sharing a personal experience, or asking a follow up question. If the other person says "I got back from Thailand two weeks ago" you have two choices: either kill the conversation by saying "Oh, cool." or continue the conversation by saying "Thailand! I was there last year - did you get to ride the elephants/scuba dive/eat anything interesting?" etc.

Improv teaches you to think very quickly on your feet and forces you to work with what you have.

Go to some improv theater. It's really funny. Improvisation is just making things up on the spot and performing a scene.

I went to a Shakespeare improv recently, and it was amazing how the actors freestyled in iambic pentameter while performing a scene about an all out war in the frozen tundra.
