From my perspective there are many things wrong with that approach. I feel it was doomed from the start because your friend didn't have the confidence to approach the girl himself.

Not only that, but your friend also went for the number before the "hook" point. Sometimes you can get a number like that if a girl is instantly hooked on you (you may be exceptionally good looking etc...) but your friend who wanted the number wasn't even there. If I was the girl, I would also have given him a weird look and blown him off.

I don't think you should get too caught up on the opening, just open with anything. It could be "hey my name is..." or "wow you look really good I wanted to talk to you." The point is, the opening doesn't matter.. you just have to OPEN.

I heard a great analogy for this from rsd. Opening is like landing a plane, sometimes it can be bumpy or smooth, what matters is that you land it.

Staring at a girl from a distance then getting someone else to approach is as creepy as it gets. Not sure what else you want to know really.
