You did the right thing.

You are the farthest thing from being the asshole.
He doesn't really care about you.
If he did he would have already found out all the things about you that you're sensitive about, like the kid thing and the other things you've mentioned.
And not because he'd stalk you or anything but because that would have made up the majority of your conversations if he really cared. He wouldn't be talking about how you should stop dating douches or pushing himself on you.
He has only created a fantasy of who you are, he doesn't see you for who you actually are and he's in love with that fantasy.
And he's unaware that he's doing that, that's why he thinks you guys are meant to be, because in his fantasy you're a totally different person.
But its not your job to fix that.
In fact, if you try to fix that issue in him, you might end up falling for him because fixing him will require effort and the more effort we put into someone the more we value and care about them.
And let me tell you why that's dangerous...he's in love with the fantasy version of you and you would be in love with your own effort.
That means in a relationship, you still will be very incompatible and both of you will force it to work, he will try to change you to align with his fantasy and you will try to be someone you're not because you've already put too many chips on the relationship to back out now and both of you will waste away and fuck each other up over a period of months or worse, years.
That's because no matter how hard both of you try, you can't change, he can't change, so resentment, frustration, and anger will build up over that relationship and more likely than not, that relationship will end in an explosive way so it may even be physically dangerous for you to be with this guy.
Sorry I had to take it that far but taking it that far really puts into perspective how much of a bad idea it would be to give this guy a chance.
Just keep him blocked, never contact him again and move on with your life.

Sounds like a typical "niceguy" character.
Just be honest, tell him you don't want to date him and say that if he doesn't want to be just friends then he is free to not talk to you anymore. Believe me, most guys will appreciate when you be honest like that, and if he gets frustrated or upset, just tell him that he is free to walk away.
