Don't make up a bullshit excuse. Arrive early and purposefully sit next to her. You've got maybe 5 minutes before class starts to get her interest and number. My friends do this every now and then and it works for them. I met a gf in a lecture, it made lectures more enjoyable soon afterwards.

Tomorrow, or whenever you next have the class, try getting there early, sitting in the seat she always sits in, then just ask her why she sits alone in the back of the class! One thing you should be mindful of is if she has social anxiety. I'm all for direct approaches and being honest, but make sure you're reading her body language to see if she's getting uncomfortable. A lot of guys stay in a conversation too long because they're not paying attention to the cues a girl is sending.
