With day game eye contact is essential also situational awareness. Most people when out and about during the day are busy thus unless you get good eye contact cold approaching can be creepy or intrusive.

Sometimes with good eye contact being direct is the only way to go.

Other times indirect followed by direct is what works best. For example :

"Excuse do you where X is"

"Actually I don't care I just wanted an excuse to talk you. My name is X what's your name".

However, I have to say my game is pretty direct with minimum effort. Some women may not have experience with a guy being direct with them, so after introducing myself I engage in small talk for bit then move into direct again. If she resists or doesn't seem interested I move on. I don't use any routines of techniques to build rapport. I assumed we have rapport and if she reacts indifferent or standoffish I move on. Other guys like a challenge I don't. I desire compliant women who take good direction not attention whores thus any sign of trouble I move on to next woman.
