The diamond was a gift from Queen Elizabeth I, and Sir Walter was an extremely ambitious man.

The quote is him saying that he has ambition, but is worried about the consequences; feeling out Elizabeth’s reaction to a possible proposal. She essentially called him a pussy, said ‘try me, fucker’, and moved on. Walter decided to move his plots along.

Basically, a pissy Walter started an affair with one of her young ladies in waiting, also named Elizabeth. There was scandal, as he got the lady in waiting pregnant, and secretly married her in a shotgun wedding. The queen put both of them in The Tower or London in 1592 for that; quite rightly, Queenie was beyond pissed at the behind the back plotting of Walter.

Elizabeth I’s anger was justified: for young nobles like Bess (other Elizabeth) who were sent to the royal household the monarch became a kind of surrogate parent, expected to supervise their upbringing and encourage lucrative marriages with other influential nobility. For the couple to ignore the queen’s prerogative here was scandalous, and spitting in the face of her authority. ‘I’ll take power any way I can.’

Long story short, he continued his scheming, got on the bad side of the Spanish, and was convicted of treason. 16 years after his conviction, he was beheaded.

There is a lot of mythology that Elizabeth I was in love with Sir Walter. There is no evidence of this. He was, instead, in love with politics, gold, and power. He used and abused women to gain these positions, and played women off each other to gain favor. Queenie saw that, and negated a good half of his plots.

It’s because of this refusal to marry, to give up her power to a husband, that she became known as The Virgin Queen.

England has a beautifully rich history of strong queens and queen consorts. Highly recommend Lisa Hilton’s book, if you’d like to learn about the medieval (rather than early modern) queens, too. Loads more books out there, but that’s an accessible place to start ☺️

It’s called ‘Queens Consort: England’s Medieval Queens’ by Lisa Hilton.

Also recommend:

‘Eleanor of Aquitaine: a Life’, by Alison Weir (who also writes lovely historical novels)
‘She Wolves: The Women Who Ruled England Before Elizabeth’, by Helen Castor
‘Women on the Margins’, by Natalie Zemon Davis
‘The Letters of Abelard and Heloise’, published by Penguin Classics. This is a translation of the letters between the two.

Heloise was a total badass, one of the most highly educated women of her time; she had an unplanned (unmarried! gasp!) pregnancy with Abelard, who had his balls chopped off. She went on to become a powerful Abbess, and personal friend of St Bernard of Clairvaux. Wonderful woman, and great, easy to read primary source.

Also, Eleanor of Aquitaine is my homegirl. Married two kings, of rival countries; ruled in her own right; was locked in a tower by one of the aforementioned husbands and subsequently rescued by her sons; and was such a cultural figure that she inspired generations of songs, art, and literature.
