I totally agree with you. It’s just like the saying “love yourself 100% before you can love anyone else.” That applies to your family, kids, friends, animals, and/or significant other. If you’re unable to care for yourself, then how would it make sense for you to care for another human being and/or animal?

I come from an asian household and I was taught that my parents’ and elders’ needs were more important than mine. Whatever I did, I had to do it for the sake of their needs. Every choice I had to run it by them. I felt I couldn’t think and act for myself, resulting in years of resenting them. I needed to love and care for myself before I’m able to do that for others.

Present day, I’m taking care of myself 100%. I have my own place, new career, and a dog. I can finally say that my relationships with my family and friends are that much better. I give more than I take and I wouldn’t have been able to do that if I didn’t put myself first.
