Results (from abstract)

Of 866 male patients interviewed, 109 (12.6%) had been the victims of domestic violence committed by a female intimate partner within the preceding year. Victims were more likely to be younger, single, African American, and uninsured The most common forms of assault were slapping, grabbing, and shoving (60.6% of victims). These were followed by choking, kicking, biting, and punching (48.6%), or throwing an object at the victim (46.8%). Thirty-seven percent of cases involved a weapon. Seven percent of victims described being forced to have sex. Nineteen percent of victims contacted the police 14% required medical attention; 11% pressed charges or sought a restraining order; and 6% pursued follow-up counseling.

Here is the full pdf.

Some of the more harrowing lines of the results:

This is supported by the fact that only 14.3% of victims in our study notified the po- lice about the incident. In contrast, Bureau of Jus- tice statistics for 1992–1996 showed that 51% of female victims of domestic violence contacted the police.Second, injuries inflicted by women on men tend to be less severe and presumably less visible. This could conceivably detract from a man’s claim that he has been victimized. Finally, there has been little research or media attention on the sub- ject. Therefore, while it has been assumed that the problem is minor or does not exist, there is little objective support for this assertion

I think this study does a really good job of shedding the astronomical difference in educational, awareness, and reporting of IPV between men and women and show that many if not most men suffer in absolutely silence. In some ways you can expect police reports to only contain about a fifth of the total incidents of IPV while with women you can expect about half. In some ways, that’s extremely disturbing.

It would make even more sense if black men who were the victims of such violence were less likely to contact the police. They don't want to add death or prison to insult and injury. The inability of the police to treat men humanely, especially black men, is exacerbating problems that you wouldn't ordinarily think of.

This is a really good point. Black men likely have a latent fear of police and the justice system in general

I'm not sure those injuries are actually less severe. Less likely to receive medical attention, certainly, but men are less likely to see medical attention for the same injuries, especially if they are caused by something like DV.

In some ways you can expect police reports to only contain about a fifth of the total incidents of IPV while with women you can expect about half.

The figures given were for victims, rather than incidents, so the difference could be even larger.

I think that’s a good point. Women do tend to be more sensitive about their own health than men do and especially if it comes from an embarrassing incident like IPV, the gap between reality and what’s reported might be extremely high.

Have you considered posting this in r/Male_Studies ?

I did. I was hoping to get more of a discussion here.
