I don't do it because it's a hassle and creates a bit of a mess. But my favorite way to make coffee is to buy 8 O'Clock whole beans, and them grind them as I use them.

I buy all different kinds of beans and fresh grind at home just before making a pot. There are many boutique stores that sell fresh whole beans from all over but frankly starbucks buys pretty decent beans.

I use a Chemex direct pour carafe (which soaks all the grounds at once like Turkish coffee but filters the grounds out.)

Use purified water or distilled... makes a huge difference.

Well if you post a positive review of the the cat or elephant dung coffees, I probably still won't splurge on it- but I'll read the hell out of it! I drink more green tea than coffee, but when I make it at home, I cook it like tea. I grind beans, and slow heat the water to just under boiling.

I shoot for about 190F, b/c I was told that was enough for extraction, but doesn't re-cook the beans, and change the composition of the flavonoids and such. Yeah, I'm a dork:)

I enjoy both tea and coffee. For tea, Jasmine is my go to for everyday use. For something nicer, I like Masala Chai. The type that needs to be boiled in a pot then strained.

I haven't tried too many types of coffee beans to be able to recommend one. I've played around more with preparation. My preferred method is to use a Vietnamese style coffee phin because it's easy to use, clean and makes a nice brew. Just need to remember to compact the coffee grinds enough or the water soaks through too quickly. Not having the time to break down the oils in the beans, the brew ends up tasting sour. Learned that one the hard way.

what's the best coffee you've ever had and why?

Probably the first "normal" sit-down cup -- of a rather generic brew -- after having been on a backwoods backpacking/camping trip for about two weeks (and with a water filter that broke so all water was basically "iodine pill" stuff, and instant coffee just didn't cut it, so I went without) -- just a plain old freshly brewed "cuppa," especially with cream & sugar and served in a nice "mug"; that was probably the "best" coffee I've ever had, certainly the one I appreciated the most.

I've found the same to be true of a lot of other things. We grow used to and generally blase about things that we have very often or regularly, and generally only appreciate them or thoroughly "enjoy" them again, after we've been deprived of them for a while (sometimes a few days or weeks, sometimes it takes a significantly longer time).

And there's a sort of massive irony there in regards to people's pursuit of "wealth" and "luxuries" -- if and when you truly attain/achieve them (as a regular thing), they generally lose their "savor" and aren't so enjoyable as they were either at first or in one's expectations or dreams/fantasies, so they don't actually end up being satisfy for very long.

My local bean store has a house dark roast blend. My moka pot espressos have such body and flavour. I'd love to try some blue mountain coffee when I can afford it haha (even the smallest bags are 2x the price of regular beans). I only drink black so I don't know anything about lattes and cappuccinos.
