Selfteach everything you can, seek tutoring or formal instruction for the rest.

For coding, selfteaching should be the bulk of that.

I hire SDEs. I don't care whether you have a degree or not; I hire programmers, not college graduates.

Having said that, many of the people at my company outside the tech field find it hard to hire people without a degree. Thankfully, they don't tend to have much sway (at my company). But you will run into them. Once you land a job, I don't think it matters much.

Your greatest asset is if you enjoy coding. If you do, then do it. Lots of it. As much as your passion can hold. Because writing software is like many other things - you get good by doing it. Let me put this another way: I'd rather you make your mistakes and learn your lessons on your dime, not mine. Although if you're clearly smart, well, smart people can learn so it doesn't matter in the long run. And if you put a github link on your resume with some interesting projects (don't have to be big), well, that says a lot more than a resume that lists "proficient in Java, Python, Perl, C, SQL, Foxpro Plus"

disclaimer: I have a post-graduate degree. It never did me any harm. I taught myself to program starting in grade 7; I didn't learn how to program in university; by the time I got there, I knew 90% of the material. University only taught me numerical analysis and non-obvious data structure like B-Trees and hashmaps.

I think the future is on-line self-taught. I'm really curious to see what Jordan Peterson does with his online university.

Never stop learning, especially if you’re doing software development. Add some classes from Udemy when they go on sale.

Boot camps can be helpful. It will stretch you in ways you may not discover on your own. That, and it’ll put you under a deadline.

I say this because I don’t usually work on things for just shits and grins. I need to have a well-defined problem to solve before I embark on the learning of things.

Somewhere in the middle. I'd reccomend taking a bootcamp for iniitial introduction and building small apps and projects in your free time .

Anyone can finish a coding bootcamp , someone who can actually spend the time an energy to make their own app or website in their private time though is special and it shows a desire to learn and do more than what was taught to you .

Lots of people graduate with coding " credentials" yet can't program a single line of code by themselves... don't be that candidate.
