People like to point out this one culture in Nepal (I think) where women supposedly take multiple husbands and that is supposedly matriarchal. Only that isn't true, this society is patriarchal and inheritance is done among patrilineal lines, with one oddity due to a scarcity of resources in the area: the woman is married to the entire family, from the youngest to the oldest son, so that the familie's possessions don't have to be split up among the male heirs like in other cultures. Especially when it comes to land that can be used for livestock or agrigulture, there simply isn't enough to split up.

So basically the male members of that family act and marry as one unit rather than individually, out of necessity. Still patriarchal, just with a twist. Em Bite Shamalamalana confirmed.
