Women in horror movies

I don't really care about women playing the main protagonist, as long as they don't play characters that were originally male.

It's the "Final girl" phenomenon. It's been around for decades now. It basically became a part of the horror genre. I don't mind it because it didn't happen because of "feminism" or some agenda being pushed. It occurred naturally, the way things should be.

If you want the audience to feel fear because your protagonist is in danger you either have to invest a lot of time to build the character of a man. The audience has to spend time with the character and you have to portray that character as someone they care about. If you fail to do that your horror movie is doomed to fail. The audience doesn't care about the ppl who experience the horror, there won't be the emotional reaction you're aiming for. So you need a well thought-out script and a competent male actor.

Or you just use an actress.

There is a reason that females are usually the lead role in horror movies. It’s because women are the weaker sex. Watching a woman in distress gives the viewer a more uneasy feeling than watching a man in the same situation. And that’s what the director is going for. As a viewer you subconsciously feel the woman is less capable of solving the problems in front of her giving you a more “on the edge of your seat movie experience”. I personally have no issue with it. As I love horror movies.

Im going to present an unpopular opinion but on the one hand women do get some pretty grisly deaths in these movies. Clearly for shock value as for all intents and purposes women are still seen as vulnerable and helpless. And I may agree with feminists on the notion that the directors and producers in these movies do come off as sexist and mysoginist who value women as disposable pieces of meat. Not that that stops women though. Think about it. It's easy, they get to get naked, they get a bit of screentime, pretending to die must not be that hard being drama queens and all, they may get to sleep with the producers or actors, and they may even get to snag a Beta Billy provider. Heck, they may even partake and even get off in some weird victim fetish where they see themselves as victims of serial killers or mutant piranhas.

But in the other hand, the final girl. Two final girls that come to mind are Neve Campbell from Scream and Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween.

Well, it depends?

Horror movies by majority show how people act in stressful situations and what kind of decisions they make and so on.

In most of them I saw, women were screened as weak physically and mentally - they panic, make ton of noise and problems, but can get a hold of themselves.

And that's pretty much how they behave normally - they also are willing to take a risk if their child is in danger.

Men in most cases are portrayed as calculating, much calmer, much more organized, and that when they panic, they are analyzing everything around them without making ton of noise.

Good example is Terminator 1 and 2 - even if those are not horror movies.

Sarah Conor was like a strong female there. In first movie, she was like a weakling. But when Kyle dies, and T-800 is still after here, she pretty much pisses herself because she knows that by herself she can't do anything.

And in Terminator 2 is the same thing. In hospital, she's willing to go against the security personel, stab with pencil the therapist and so on.

But the moment she faces T-800, you can see how she's crawling back in the hall and is so scared, paralyzed by terror that she can't even scream.

But sometimes, movies portray the female as a male - and that's ridiculous, because she's playing a male version of character and you see zero feminity there.

Movies are actually good depending on the acting level and story - story may be even a bit meh, but if acting is gold then you'll like the movie anyway.

I think they should start remaking the classic horror movies (again🤦🏻‍♂️) but with the “Final Girl” into the “Final Guy”.

MarySue characters are the ones I dislike. The 120 lb woman who easily throws a 200 lb man across the room and magically the fight is over? Characters like Ellen Ripley are far more believable than characters like Carol Danvers. Hell, even the latina dyke marine from Aliens is far more believable than Carol Danvers.

Alita Battle Angel & The hole in the ground. Two of the greatest movies of 2019 with female leads. I don't consider a movie bad because of the gender of the lead actors. I consider it a bad movie when they denigrate the male actors in order to prop up the females.
