Are male adoptive children less desirable than female children in the US?

It seems that there is a preference for women, and possibly a very strong one.

You would be amazed at how often little research is done on sex/gender when males are disadvantaged in some way. There aren't statistics on in vitro fertilization preferences, either, but there is some information out there that female babies are highly preferred.

Women in the US and UK favour female babies over male when they have the opportunity to try and select gender of their own baby so I would guess the same of adopted kids.

If it is true that more girls are adopted even when equal number of boys are available, then I think at least one factor is fear. It might not be politically correct to say it, but most adoptive parents are exquisitely aware that some adopted children will have some very severe mental problems. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a big and often undiagnosed problem and so is an early alienation type syndrome leaving the kids basically sociopaths. (I can't remember the name of it right now, but it is really scary.) Both of these unfortunately not rare problems with adoptive children can lead to extreme violence. So there might be a perception that girls are smaller, more docile, more controllable and less likely to flip out into extreme violence. When you are bringing a total stranger into your house who one day will be bigger than you are, including during the unruly teenage years, this perception could be an important factor. It is also true that adoptive parents tend to be much older. They may feel less able to handle an active boisterous child and have the perception that a girl will be calmer and quieter.

We already know that women prefer daughters over sons and that women rule the family, so it seems predictable that they make most of the adoption choices and hence will choose girls over boys. Amerika -- it's like China, except in reverse!
