I would request a discount for being on the ground floor since you are a lot more likely to be robed. If you are in the UK and you took them to court, you would win since they are not allowed to discriminate in the provision of a service.

I had that conversation once with a landlord when I was a student trying to rent off-campus. He said as a rule he preferred female tenants because they were cleaner and quieter (I'm in a minority of posters here who believe him entitled to that preference on his own private property - I only wish he could have said it in the ad and saved me a trip). So he had a building full of female tenants, except in the street level apartments, where he preferred to have men who could deal with a drunk knocking on the door at 3am.

It is sexist, but this is such a small issue that I'd just ignore it. No one's really being harmed by it.

They're just as likely to put men on the top floor next year out of fear that men would trap women inside the building.

In all honesty it makes me feel more sorry for women because they get told 'if you were on the ground floor you would be raped and robbed' and then they believe it.

I agree, this is the real shame here, spreading that fear based propaganda.

It's sexist and it's illegal. Even if their factoid were true (it's not; men are attacked more) it would be illegal. But there's not much you can do about it as a woman because you're not the one being attacked by it. Well you could make a perverse complaint about it the same as that girl who's trying to sue the SS.

If you happen to be male then this applies (both US and UK):

Make a sexual harassment complaint against the school. Say that this sex discriminatory policy also makes you as a man feel like a second class citizen because the university cares less about your safety, as a man, than it does for women, and that this (probably along with a lot of other sexist policies by the university) creates a hostile educational environment which is sex discriminatory, and therefore illegal.
