Actress and overall badass Keira Knightley made headlines this past weekend when she told reporters her daughter is banned from watching Disney movies, including “Cinderella” and “the Little Mermaid,” that she deems anti-feminist.

Knightley told Ellen DeGeneres that Cinderella “waits around for a rich guy to rescue her,” and Ariel gives her “voice up for a man.”

Cool, a cage fight with feminism against Disney. This should be interesting.

“I look at my girls and ask, ‘Don’t you think it’s weird that Snow White didn’t ask the old witch why she needed to eat the apple?’” Bell said. “‘Don’t you think that it’s weird that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission? Because you cannot kiss someone if they’re sleeping.’”

How many parents kiss their sleeping children? You see that a lot in movies. But everything today is sexual assault I guess.

These are the conversations we should have with children.

That's your call of course, but it's every parents call as well.

I wonder how many roles Keira Knightley has taken on that follow this rule. I seem to recall that in Love Actually, after her friend tells her he loves her, she kisses him without having asked for his consent. And you know what, just because someone tells you they love you, that doesn't mean you have permission to kiss them.

Fairytales largely originated as female stories, as evidenced by the fact that they are still largely preferred by females today compared to males. If they were written by men for men and to suit their own tastes, why would females be the overwhelming consumers of fairytales?

They have been collected by men into written formats, but the stories follow the same protocol as any modern female fantasy. The uber rich prince/billionaire CEO/vampire/beast/werewolf/weredragon would do anything to get the girl. This same format is still played out in abundance in romance novels particularly on Amazon ( and yes, those weredragon ones are modern iterations, not from way back in the 1600s).

It's hilarious that these tales are criticized because they involve women hoping to marry a rich prince or being saved by one. That's like a man writing about a rich beautiful princess who's willing to risk her life to slay a dragon, search the whole kingdom, battle a seawitch, etc. just to be with a man, and us criticizing it for the impositions it places on the male character! How dare he give up his voice for her, and what a pervert she was for kissing him while he slept!
