I'm certain the intention is to relight the false accusation bonfire to stir everyone up for the midterms. From an administration unique in modern US history for its willingness to invent lies and push them with a straight face this is hypocritical.

That said, I hope they investigate and prosecute, if possible. It might restore some trust in the ability of the law to protect against false claims.

Her claims looked dodgy and large numbers of classmates would have known about that sort of thing. Avenatti went public with obviously weak evidence when checking was possible - the WaPo and NYTimes had good contacts among the students, they could have quickly checked for plausibility. So a good ass kicking might be due to him too.
