Leyonhjelm is a bit of an oddbod and cops some criticism for that, but I think he's a national treasure in the same way that Philip Davies is for the UK.

When political ideologues are pushing nonsense like this, he's often the only politician willing to question and challenge their claims. That's a very sad indictment of our political class indeed.

DL: "You say the quickest way to close the gender pay gap would be for employers to analyze their own staff. Would that reveal unequal pay for equal work? Do you think that is a primary contributor, men and women doing the same work and receiving different pay?"

WGEA: "ah it is one of the contributors, but I mean it's a legal requirement for all organisations to pay people the same regardless"

DL: "I'm aware of that. I'm interested in your view of how many people you believe are breaking the law on that?"

WGEA: "That is something that we cannot measure in the data we collect, which is why we ask them to do their own gender pay gap analysis. We ask them to measure three things: the like to like pay gap, the bi-level gaps [something about salary bands??? I don't know], and the organisational wide pay gap which looks at distribution of men and women in different roles. It's in the information that comes out of those three different analyses that you're able to get a true picture of what's going on in each organisation."

DL: "If you took some predominately female occupations like child care or primary school teaching and there was a substantial increase in males working in those sectors and obviously earning the same pay as the women, what would it do to those statistics?"

WGEA: ..... silence.

DL: "Would there be a reduction in the gender pay gap, because, especially child care being a low paid occupation, would that change the aggregate statistics on the gender pay gap?"

WGEA: "Um, I, ah, I would have to, ah, I, ah, you know, until that happens I can't tell you senator."

DL: "But you arrive at your statistics, you must know what goes into those statistics. "

WGEA: "We haven't done any modelling."

DL: "Would you like to take that on notice. My question is quite a genuine one. If the statistics are measuring unequal treatment, that's one thing, but if it's measuring different choices made by men and women in terms of their occupations, that's a different thing. So what I'm wondering is if there is a lot more men in childcare, that's not a high paid job and it's overwhelmingly women employed in it, how would that affect your calculation of the gender pay gap?"

WGEA: "We haven't don't proper modelling so I can't give you an answer. Indication would be that as we measure the average, it would, it could, it would, it could, lead to a decrease in the gender pay gap." "But we haven't done the modelling and to be frank we don't have resources to do modelling. We only do analyses of the data we collect."

DL: "yeah no [common Australian lingo] that's...I'm not criticizing you for not having done it, there's a question as to where what you're measuring, or what the calculation of the gender pay gap can be attributed to. If it's due to the fact that men and women are being discriminated against in terms of paying different amounts which is illegal that would be a concern, if it's if it's a consequence of the occupational choices that women make then there's perhaps less of a concern ... that's where I'm heading"

WGEA: "And I get that Senator but I but I would also say it is a contributing factor it, is not the contributing factor we know that there are a number of contributing factors to the gender pay gap"

DL:"hmm all right, and... so I'm going to be quick as I usually am, yeah so you're currently you're capturing data or reporting data based on males and females. Are you under any pressure, do you have any sense that in due course you will need to capture data on other genders, transsexuals and intersex?"

WGEA: "The Act is very clear, this is about collecting data around women and men and that is all we collect on and that is all we can collect on under the Act."

DL: "okay thank you"

The Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) is an Australian Government statutory agency responsible for promoting and improving gender equality in Australian workplaces. The agency was created by the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012 and provides employers with advice, practical tools and education to help them improve gender equality.

Activities

Non-public sector employers with 100 or more staff are required to report to the agency annually, between 1 April-31 May, against six gender equality indicators:

I think its sad that he is the only politician in Australia who seems to want to step up and challenge these bogus ideologies.

Seems like everyone else is more concerned about trying to appease these groups on order to grovel for their vote
