The two men were described as "ringleader" and "accomplice";it's not clear what role the women had in the kidnapping. Generally speaking ringleaders get more severe sentences than followers. Also, everyone involved was quite old.

I don't think this article gives us enough information to judge whether the sentences were appropriate or to conclude the women got off easy because they were women.

Well and good, but why wasn't the money returned to the two couples? I salute them for their daring. They had every right to do what they did. And this silly, impotent German court that tried them could use a few lessons. Applied however the couples and their friends wish. No one should have gone to jail.
