One thing to keep in mind though is physical size. If I hit my wife it will be much worse than the reverse (purely from a damage standpoint) because I am 6 foot tall and she is 4 foot 11.

That is one of the findings of the study the article mentions. But equally worth noting is this:

domestic abuse within intimate relationships poses a greater threat to women than to men. Women suffer close to two thirds of the injuries, largely because men are stronger on average than women. In addition, women and men differ in the severity of their actions; women are more likely to scratch or slap their partners, and men more commonly punch or choke their partners.

My own experience bears this out. Many years ago, I had a girlfriend who hit me on several occasions. Technically that was DV, but she was much smaller than me and she did no damage at all; I was able to grab her wrists and stop her without much trouble. When women suffer from DV, it's often at the hands of a much larger man who punches rather than slaps.
