In 1984 Terry Williams was sentenced to death for murdering two men. After his sentencing, when jurors learned these men had repeatedly raped Williams for years, several came forward to say they no longer supported his death sentence. He is scheduled to be executed on October 3rd, 2012.

There's a very simple and logical explanation for this sort of thing and we all know it. Girls can hit guys, guys cant hit girls. That's it. Done. When we were first dating, my gf and me had a fight, she got angry and slapped me. I slapped her back, not hard(not nearly as hard as she hit me), but enough to sting. She was furious. I calmly said "You hit me. Why was that ok, but I can't hit back?" She stopped dead in her tracks and has never struck me in anger again after five years. It was the first time it had ever occurred to her that it wasn't ok to slap a guy when they pissed her off.

Men aren't as violent towards women because men know they'll go to jail. Women have a free reign to hit their men because there's no consequences.

I plan to download the full text when I am on campus later to read more about their methods. But I wanted to discuss the results, in case anyone else is more familiar with their method of explaining the results:

Results. Almost 24% of all relationships had some violence, and half (49.7%) of those were reciprocally violent. In nonreciprocally violent relationships, women were the perpetrators in more than 70% of the cases. Reciprocity was associated with more frequent violence among women (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=2.3; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.9, 2.8), but not men (AOR=1.26; 95% CI=0.9, 1.7). Regarding injury, men were more likely to inflict injury than were women (AOR=1.3; 95% CI=1.1, 1.5), and reciprocal intimate partner violence was associated with greater injury than was nonreciprocal intimate partner violence regardless of the gender of the perpetrator (AOR=4.4; 95% CI=3.6, 5.5).

To me, that is saying that women are a mean of 2.3x more frequently violent in reciprocal cases than in non-reciprocal cases, with a 95% confidence that the true value of of this ratio lies within 1.9 and 2.8. Men, on the other hand, have a mean of 1.26x the frequency of violence in reciprocal cases than in non-reciprocal cases, with a 95% confidence that the value lies between 0.9 and 1.7. Since this cannot be distinguished from 1 at the 95% confidence level, they state that men are not statistically more frequently violent when their partner is also violent.

It would be interesting to know what they think the cause of this gender difference is. Perhaps it is that women are violent for their own reasons plus they are violent as a response to violence, where as men are violent for their own reasons only, or mostly as a response to violence?

I think the most important factor to understanding this data would be to figure out the perpetrator who initiated the reciprocal violence. But that is a very difficult thing to address, I think.

This study is a bit surprising to me. What does everyone else think about it, it's methods and results?

[–]Maschalismos 7 points8 points9 points 16 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Doesn't surprise me in the goddamn least. Was physically abused by both my mom and my (now EX) gf

[–]Bascome 7 points8 points9 points 16 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Same I have never abused a single woman other than my older sister when I was 14 (last time we ever fought and I won for the first time ever as a result she never picked another fight). I have however been abused by at least 5 women, once to the point of me going to jail. That story already made it to the front page once....

A couple things to note:

Regarding injury, men were more likely to inflict injury than were women

and

The 3 questions included in the Add Health study do not capture all forms of violence that occur between relationship partners, including many of the more severe forms of partner violence on the Conflict Tactics Scale (e.g., used a knife or gun, choked, or burned). ... Similarly, only a single item assessed injury to victims and it focused on injury frequency and excluded injury severity and whether medical attention was needed or sought. Thus, it is unclear whether the data presented here would be similar had the violence and injury assessment been more thorough or if different forms of violence had been measured and analyzed separately.

The vast majority of studies of DV find women are injured far more often than men -- at least in terms of injuries requiring a hospital visit. Insofar as it looked at injury, this study seems to back that up.

This makes a lot of intuitive sense, because generally speaking women are smaller than men, and while they may engage in DV as often as men or even more often (depending on the study you look at), the consequences of this violence may be far less severe than the consequences of the violence inflicted on them by men.

So in a sense, women may be the primary instigators of DV (in terms of the number of incidents) AND the primary victims (in terms of actual consequences like physical injuries).

My own experience may be relevant here:: I had a girlfriend some years ago who hit me on a couple of occasions. But to call me a victim of DV in any significant sense would be silly; she was much smaller than me and did absolutely no damage; I quickly grabbed her wrists and stopped her. To classify this as the same sort of DV as an attack that puts someone in the hospital is, I think, highly misleading.

EDIT: Added link above.

[–]FigNinja 5 points6 points7 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While women may not inflict as much damage, violence from someone you love and who claims to love you is damaging. It's just as hateful even if the blow doesn't land as hard.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 16 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sure, but it's not unfair to expect an adult to understand that if you hit someone enough times, they will probably hit you back. And if you are wondering around, picking fights with people twice your size, you are asking for it.

If I remember rightly, another part of this study said that the greatest indicator of the level of violence in a womens future relationships is the state of their current and past relationships.

Furthermore, just because the majority of the people that end up in hospital because of DV are women, that does not mean that the minority can be ignored.

The point of all this being that the current, feminist approach to DV of it's all becasue of the menz needs to be drastically revised.

[–]catlebrity -4 points-3 points-2 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm sorry. If you're twice the size as your partner, and your partner hits you, you don't hit back. (Whatever the genders involved are.)

Regardless of size, you don't hit back. If your partner regularly hits you and you hit back, it's likely to escalate the problem. Instead, you get out of the relationship.

Nowhere did I suggest that the minority should be ignored. I'm just troubled that people in the subreddit seem to think that studies like this show that men are the primary victims of DV, in terms of real-world consequences, when in fact this study (and others that have been cited in this subreddit) show the opposite: that men (on average) do the most damage.

EDIT: Clarified a couple of points.

What a surprise, catlebrity is arguing against men's rights...

[–]catlebrity -2 points-1 points0 points 16 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

How exactly is what I said an argument against men's rights?

[–]AmazingMaze -1 points0 points1 point 16 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You really deserve no reply, because I hate feeding trolls, but here goes. You are in /menrights. MEN, not women. - Yet you consistently post feminist arguments and cherry pick feminist links - i.e. "women are injured far more often then men".

This subreddit simply isn't about women's rights.

[–]catlebrity 0 points1 point2 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The study looked at two things: the frequency of violence and the frequency of injury. The title of the OP simply quoted the first half of the study's abstract, leaving out the part about the frequency of injury. If anything, the OP was cherrypicking, not me.

If you want to deal with DV in the real world, you need to pay attention to not only who does it but who bears the brunt of the damage from it.

If you want to live in an imaginary r/mensrights world where quoting the actual study under discussion counts as "trolling," I suppose that's your right, but that seems rather silly.

[–]hopeless_case 3 points4 points5 points 16 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This makes a lot of intuitive sense, because generally speaking women are smaller than men,

You have to sleep sometime. At that point, it doesn't matter how much stronger you are than the other person. All that matters is who is vicious and who is not.

So the next time you are running your eye over a room full of people, don't ask yourself "which are the biggest people here", ask yourself "which are the most vicious"?

I think women are men are equally vicious, and that in the general population, the vicious are a minority. Therefore, it is likely that the vicious will be paired up with the non-vicious, and that the vicious are just as likely to be women as men.
