i posted this over there but i like it so much (if i do say so myself) that i'll repost it here:

i like the minefield analogy

a minefield is 99.99% free of mines

when you walk through a minefield, you feet will only walk on .01% of the total area

someone who is well versed in math/probability could tell you your chances of stepping on a mine, from a purely statistical point of view, are quite small. it's totally safe!

however, you will sure as fucking SHIT get your god damn leg blown off if you walk through a minefield.

i leave it as an exercise for the reader to extend this analogy to how one actually makes it through a minefield if faced with the task.
