Great read.

Thanks.

Reminds me of a friend who thinks he can, 'opt out of the power game'.

These types are greatly infuriating.

Kind of like the clueless section of the Gervais Principle chart

I never got around to finishing the Gervais related reading, thanks for the reminder.

First, solid article and blog-laid out straight especially for rookie RPers like myself. A metaphor I use for this marriage/LTR shit is that you're really in close quarter knife fight. There's no distance from your opponent, unlike a plate or ONS stand, so you're either parrying, striking or hand/fist checking.

Sounds a bit over the top, believe me success in the power game esp in LTRS, takes as much focus, balance and aggression as if you're going blades against some drunk ahole.

Good article as usual, I have something to add. I'm 5'8" and yes I've had tall guys try to intimidate me, people assume they can easily fuck me up just because I'm shorter. They assume that until they notice the muscle, then they realize I am amused at their posturing and over confidence. At that point, they usually drop it, move on then talk shit to their buddies in an effort to save face.

I've never lost a fight nor wrestling match to someone taller than 6'. You see, being short I had to fight, had to learn to defend myself, and that builds confidence in your ability. Benching well north of 450lbs and the required muscle mass doesn't hurt the confidence either. I got my ass kicked almost daily for eight years, until I was sixteen, from then on nobody has managed it. I ended it the hard way, throwing beat downs on anyone who fucked with me.

All those fights, the abuse heaped on me growing up by my brother and father, then time spent in the military resulted in a mindset best described as 'the baddest mother fucker in the valley' even if I'm not, just how I walk and move exudes it. People move out of my way in public, even if they are 6'5", they move, mostly because of the body language and attitude, and probably because I'm not a 150lb wimp.

People assume tall men are dangerous, they assume smaller men are weak or helpless because they are short. You are exactly right that short men need to prove it, walk the walk, and learn to defend themselves whereas most tall guys don't. That is the main reason I am confident when threatened by a tall guy, I know my capabilities as well as his weaknesses, like being unable to stand with no feet under him. I know how to handle those situations, most often the tall guy doesn't becasuse everyone assumes they are dangerous and never really fuck with him. Thus he is an untested quantity.

We have more available than money and wit, and when it comes to self defense, stature doesn't mean shit. Training, experience, capability, and presence of mind are vastly more important. You can be arrogant because you're tall, most people will move for you. Be aware I am not unique, there are many of us out there who have been tested, got tired of the abuse/neglect and changed ourselves. We can't be taller, but we can be someone you really don't want to test.

Simply put, short men can display power that trumps stature, but he doesn't get it for free from genetics. You are spot on how it works, and what to do to take the power, and its entertaining to have huge people give up the dominant role to a man a food shorter than they are. Here's a hint, avoid wrestlers who made it to state tournaments in weight classes heavier than 150 lbs. Those guys will probably fuck you up.

Brilliant post, although I wasn't expecting such an in-depth tangent based on my relatively brief example on physical stature.

Small guys should not give up on themselves because they are small and tall guys above the average in their country should make an effort to back up their stature with actual martial arts training so that when someone does test them they can follow through. I wouldn't say 5'8 is small, it's 2 inches beneath average for a white guy in the US (Average is 5'10.5) or in England just an inch beneath average (5'9), it is the average in China, above average in Japan and 3 inches above average in India.

Tall guys without martial arts training or some sort of fighting experience heavily rely on the bluff, most short guys have to prove themselves as they lack the bluff, the optimum power balance anyone can possess is both the bluff of stature and the fighting skill to back that stature up, basically as a tall guy you get some good genetics with your height but you need to be able to fight well too, much of the time you won't need to prove yourself based on appearance alone, but when you do need to prove yourself you'll want to be able to back up your stature with fighting prowess otherwise the superior fighter height regardless will hand you your ass on a platter.

Tall people have no excuse, they can learn to fight. Short people can't magically make themselves taller, it is what it is, you make the best with the cards you're dealt in the genetic lottery in order to become the best version of yourself. Everyone unavoidably has different limits but reaching those limits should be everyone's personal goal. With a lot of training most people will be surprised how high their limits actually are.

Your story is a good example of someone becoming stronger due to suffering and adversity, adversity is a good teacher and also an incredibly potent catalyst for power acquisition.

You covered the rest quite well, so I didn't feel like adding to it. You being taller skews your perspective somewhat, so I wanted to add a shorter perspective for those of us who are average stature.

Life is what you make it, some have to earn more than others, its just how it is.

[–]Confluenced 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

good reply, I am 5'8" and was the only middle eastern at my school during 9/11. I got my ass kicked DAILY, a few times it was twice in a day, so I decided to take up wrestling, water polo, and swimming.

What you realize through wrestling, is that size is not as important as skill. Tall guys will topple and once I have you on the ground we are equal.

My torture ended Senior year of highschool, 3 mexicans tried to jump me on the 2nd day of school (i had gained 15 lbs of muscle during the summer, doing greco style wrestling). I got one guy on the ground fast and knocked him out, did the same to the second, and finally got the third down.

To date, I have not lost a fight. Because when I fight its to kill, its for my life. I hate fighting, absolutely despise it, but I have learned height means shit.

[–]2 Senior Endorsed Contributorvengefully_yours 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuckin eh man. When you can do a quick take down like a fireman's or a double leg, put them out in less than three seconds, three guys aren't very tough to deal with. Greco is awesome with the throws and grappling you can fuck someone up fast and let gravity do its thing.

I avoid violence, but if they bring it, believe I will finish it.

[–]thatguydan01 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Damn I'm glad you were able to take control and stand up for yourself. People can be so stupid.

[–]TheRedTrader 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

These are both good examples of the long term positives of adversity. You are much stronger now due to your previous weakness than you would of been if you were mediocre. Now obviously someone who is really pro active can slowly improve themselves but there is nothing like a bit of necessity to speed that process along.

[–]down_with_whomever 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

I've seen this kind of attitude from a lot of short men and while i kind of get it, sometimes they get aggressive with me for entirely no reason. Just speaking from experience here. Most short guys I know just act like normal guys - but occasionally you have one with a huge chip on their shoulder. Sure, maybe you've got something to prove. Sure, maybe people were a dick to you. But I'm a very friendly guy, and I've never behaved aggressive to anyone; and i'm tall enough that to me everyone looks short, so I don't care if a guy is 5'6 or 5'10. But the fact that I see this type of pissy short guy in conversation just sneak in that they are confident they could kick my ass, unprovoked and largely without context, isn't really alpha, it's just kind of sad. And it's socially awkward - kind of reminds me of middle school behavior.

I know my capabilities as well as his weaknesses, like being unable to stand with no feet under him. I know how to handle those situations, most often the tall guy doesn't becasuse everyone assumes they are dangerous and never really fuck with him. Thus he is an untested quantity.

I've gotten this speech so many times from short guys in person when there was absolutely no reason for them to be taking the conversation there at all. There was nothing aggressive, nothing confrontational going on in the context of our interaction, they just felt they could score some napoleon-complex points by trying to ape out at someone who was tall. Just a lot of dick-waving insecurity. Especially the part about legs. "The bigger you are, the harder you fall." Yawn, heard it all before man. I'm not impressed.

[–]2 Senior Endorsed Contributorvengefully_yours 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I get aggression from small guys often as well. 5' nothing, 100 and nothing, liquid courage in front of their budies giving them the idea they can get me to cower. They want to feel tough, so they duck with the big guy.

Here's the difference. I don't go looking for trouble, I avoid it and walk away from those little drunks laughing to myself. However, I have had many tall guys try to intimidate me, claiming they will kick my ass, and threatening me. Unless they actually take a swing, I laugh about it and walk off, sometimes letting them know they are amusing with their overconfidence.

I don't give a fuck if you are impressed, your arrogance is sadly not backed up by capability. Here is how I know. You are so insecure that a short man might be stronger, tougher, and able to beat the shit out of you, that you had to most this and tell me you're not impressed. It bothers you that you haven't been tested, don't really know what its like to take on a bligger opponent and fuck him up. I've seen this many times on reddit, and its ALWAYS a tall guy who is butthurt and just cant believe he isn't superior to everyone. Doesn't matter if its fighting ability, bench press, or how fast your car is, your ego is so unsupported that you feel the need to call out the short man let and put him in his place.

If you want to get embarrassed by an old crippled guy, I am waiting. I have no fear anymore, certainly not of an arrogant tall guy living on easy mode in comparison. :-)

[–]down_with_whomever 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Maybe you don't go looking for trouble. But as I said - I was speaking from personal experience. And a lot of the people I encountered were looking for trouble, and were trying to start shit to prove something.

I've never tried to intimidate anybody, as I wrote already. I am not being arrogant in saying that, it's just not just something I do. I'm sorry that whoever you referred to in you story bullied you - but I don't do that. I am not trying to say that I'm better than you, or anybody else. I'm trying to say that it's off-putting when I see aggressive short guys starting shit with people for no reason because they have a chip on their shoulder. This I have seen with my own eyes, many times.

These people don't make me insecure. Uncomfortable, yes - insecure, no. It's awkward when people have a fixation on fighting or violence, regardless of how big they are. It's a hallmark of douchebaggery. Physical confrontation isn't on the forefront of my mind. This doesn't define the way I interact with the world or the way that I think about other people. Maybe you're really sure you could hurt me. And maybe you could. A wild dog could also hurt me - it doesn't mean I feel insecure about myself because something which is smaller, can be harmful. There's more to life than who can kick whose ass - that's a bunch of middle school bullshit. It's not the benchmark by which I measure myself. But it sure as hell seems to be the benchmark by which you measure yourself.

You can call me arrogant, you can call me butthurt or fragile ego or assure me and everyone else about how ass-kicking you are, anything that makes you feel better. But if you could dial down the napoleon complex a little bit less you'd see that my original reply wasn't an insult to you, as you seem to have taken it by your need to call me arrogant and insecure, but rather a very accurate anecdote which describes the shared experience of many guys who have dealt with some little men who were angry and physically confrontational for no visibly apparent reason.

Your response, while disappointing, isn't surprising. Tell me again how you can kick my ass, bro - it seems to be very important to you.

[–]2 Senior Endorsed Contributorvengefully_yours -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why do you take what I said as a personal affront? Insecurity and a lack of self confidence would be my assessment. I could also talk about age, because you are most probably younger than I am. Face it, there will always be someone better than you at something, doesn't matter if its fighting, writing, fucking, building, driving, or whatever, chances are you are quite average in most respects. Being tall makes some things easier, like getting laid, it doesn't make you better, smarter, or more capable.

There is a difference between confidence that stems from hardship, sacrifice, and rough experiences, and confidence that comes from everyone admiring you because you grew more as a kid. If you ever achieve anything on your own, against adversity and without the benefit of others, then you will understand. I doubt it though, since you don't sound like a do it yourself the hard way type. You sound more like a female that has to tear everyone else down rather than embark on self improvement.

I'm definitely questioning your claims of bench pressing "well north" or anywhere around 450lbs. Any video of this?

[–]2 Senior Endorsed Contributorvengefully_yours 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

No video, I don't care if you believe it or not. I'm not looking for validation or to intimidate anyone online. I did 265 in high school, 350 three years later before my first war. That war worked me hard, I gained almost 40lbs of mass from it. Call bullshit if you want, I know what I have done and feel no need to make videos of anything but my cars.

[–]AkihiroDono 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You don't want validation but take videos of your cars to show people...for validation?

[–]2 Senior Endorsed Contributorvengefully_yours 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

More for inspiration, I rebuild muscle cars and high powered drag cars. I'm crippled from the Iraq war, yet I can still make a rusty piece of shitnrun damn fast and look good doing it. If I can do it, almost anyone can, just like the lifting and everything else I do. If a short fat crippled man can do it, you probably can too with enough work.

Edit. Here is one of the cars I spent 2000 hours restoring, mind you I am not a body and paint man, I build engines, transmissions, and shit like that. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gUBrydk6P0w

[–]AkihiroDono 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's pretty cool; my Grandfather has a 55' Delray he's put a tonne of time and effort into. Everyone needs a hobby they enjoy.

I'm even more impressed with the lifting due to your situation. Good job sir.

[–]2 Senior Endorsed Contributorvengefully_yours 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I only lift now to stay in shape, all my efforts to put on lean mass was in the military. I don't need all of it now, and its heavy hauling around 210lbs of meat on torn up knees.

Something of an instructive rant inspired by /u/redpillschool's post the other day. Thanks for the inspiration.

[–]fapordie_ 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Unrelated, but can you make the color of the foreground darker(or bigger)? A light grey foreground doesn't go well with a white background.

[–]TRP Vanguard: "Dark Triad Expert"IllimitableMan[S] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with your observation about black making a better reading colour than varying shades of grey (no pun intended) however on my screen I have no issue in reading it.

Reason I can't change the colour is that wordpress wants to charge me $30 just to edit minor things like CSS and font colour (a rip-off) and it is by far too much hassle to change the font colour by hand for each blog post, their text editor loves to add random junk code into the articles if you try to edit the posts own HTML.

When I move to my own server (probably within a month or two) I'll change the font colour in the code to black and then text colour should default to black for all articles.

TLDR: no I can't yet, but I will soon.

[–]Klockmon 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This was a great article, where it says, confidence is the fuel of power, there is no power without confidence for they are brothers, is pretty bang on. Not a bad way to live if you want to excel with women or even advancing in your career. I loved this article. A good motto to live by.

[–]Xplicitable2 points 12 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

My ethics teacher posed me the question "Can you be successful through honest means?"

I see it nigh impossible to achieve large amounts of success without manipulating scenarios. Success is not entitled, free or a present. Success is earned through action and asserting your power (bluff). The best teams in competitive sport, the most powerful people are proactive, not reactive. Waiting for everything to land in your hand is futile; it takes aggressive play to advance forward. Furthermore, as history shows through feudal empire management, commercial, economical and military success has strong correlation with distancing people as far away as individuals as possible. The closer a nation can be managed collectively like pawns on a chess board, the easier it is to achieve success. A great example is the pre industrial revolution England and post. Traditionally parliamentary seats were held by the gentry and they were the only people literate. The advent of machinery in the 19th century saw the working class require education in basic literacy to understand the instructions. Low and behold, within 100 years the government shifts towards representative democracy and the Suffragette movement emerges.

Power concepts on a macro level show how manipulation is necessary for success. There needs to be a level of delusion for progress of the top 10%, and this is what politics has favoured for centuries until the mass socialism of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Manipulation versus ethics versus legality versus integrity.
