Here at TRP, it is a truism that "men are the gatekeepers of commitment while women are the gatekeepers of sex". This corresponds to the Parental Investment Theory, according to which, sex leads to reproduction and reproduction is much more costly for women than men (Women have to make a minimum investment of nine months on average whereas men simply have to ejaculate). Therefore, women reserve sex for men with "good fitness" (e.g., superior genes, high status, abundant resources, etc.).
This would explain why women seem to have a higher standard than men when selecting their sexual partners. However, what it doesn't explain is men having standards or preferences at all. For instance, most men would have a sexual preference for a physically fit girl over a physically fat girl (edit: read attractive girl over unattractive girl). But why should men have this preference at all? From the perspective of male sexual strategy, the fit or fat girl (edit: read attractive or unattractive) have the same value; all he has to do is ejaculate. How then can we account for the male preference?
