Even if you're not fat, if you're sleeping like shit, snoring, or exhibit any of the symptoms of sleep apnea, get a legitimate sleep study and take care of that pronto. It will literally destroy your health.
You can have it even if you're skinny. You can be a ripped athlete and have it too. So keep that in mind.
For example a fit patient may have sleep apnea and their reported symptoms could be: never feel rested; difficulty waking up in the morning; frequent sinus infections; nightmares.

I'm not even fat but the pulseoxymeter sounds like a cool gizmo, for the price. Is there any other useful info that can be gleaned from it? Seems like it would be interesting to monitor yourself while exercizing, etc.
[–]1rporion[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I honestly don´t know, gotta be honest, google would know more than me.
What actually is an interesting gizmo is a glucometer, you know, the thing diabetics measure their blood sugar with, because fat or not, if you slowly become insulin resistant, you might want to know that, because diabeetuz.
You can also find out what foods, in what quantity, have what effect on your body.
Don´t get me wrong if you are into BB a well timed insulin spike can work wonders but the key words are "well timed".
Around the same price.

Here is one about the high blood-pressure: Walk. I know, this isn't the normal TRP advice of 'lift, and do it twice you fuck' but walking is good for you. Do not jog. Ever. Running makes you skinny unless it's sprints. Walk. This keeps the muscle mass you do have but limbers you up. It will be boring. It will suck for a few weeks, I know my legs hurt after walking 18min miles (smidge quicker than 3mph) 2 miles a day for 4 days a week at first. But then the pain eases up. After a few weeks it's not so bad, then one session the pain is barely there.
I noticed in a month my 140/100 blood pressure went down to 125/80. This is within normal range. I walked another week it was 120/70. Then I had an ankle injury at the time, but guess what? Even after months of not walking for exercise my blood pressure hovered back up only to a consistent 120/80. There is long-term benefit to walking. It makes you feel pretty good overall.
My strategy I've been employing to get in shape: Stronglifts 5x5 for 3 days a week. On the off days walk in the nearby park, do not do it more than an hour as I noticed no benefit doing it any longer and in fact it just puts extra strain on your system. Your legs will be sore from doing squats then walking the next day, embrace it. As the pain goes away you become more. The walking is a perfect compliment to lifting and it burns the fat. You will also notice improvements at work, not being as tired on your feet, going up stairs quicker, not as dragged out after lunch, overall walking gives more of the 'extra' benefits of exercise while lifting gives you the main benefit of looking better. DO BOTH. DO IT NOW.

I have fibromyalgia. I believe this could be another factor which contributes to my lack of recovery. Just everyday worse. I'm order one and get it checked out. Thanks. I was under the impression I needed to go somewhere and have a sleep study done.

If you have the strong suspicion that you have it, that would be a good idea but why shell out 1000 bucks if you can rule it out with 20 ?

I was under the assumption that it was not as accurate as the lab tech.

My sleep study was free with insurance

Fibromyalgia? Did you try an Autoimmune Protocol?

Hopped on Paleo a few years ago. Found the pill. Was doing better health wise. But rushed the process and went back to normal person diet and everything reverted. Now gradually building back up with proper diet to heal the body. Test recently showed leaky gut. So, it'll be a process but it only goes up from rock bottom.

Guys, single point:
This is true. All of it, clinically tested and all - and now all solved with weight loss.
It really is good advice. Take it straight from the horse's (or ex fat guy) mouth.

My 9-5 income comes from working in a medical office on a three month assignment right now.
Forget just sleep apnea. 90 percent of the people who come through our office with a laundry list of health issues are either:
A:) Over 70 years old
B:) Fat/Obese
If you are fat you are causing way more problems than necessary. If you have bad genetics for health history and are fat, you're doubling down on dying before turning fifty.

Totally agree but SA can prevent you from losing weight !
My doctor had patients who could not lose weight at 500 calories a day!
So yeah, people should lose weight but making it as easy as possible gets you actual results.
I get overcoming obstacles and whatnot, but trying to ram down a brick wall if there is a door right in front of you is just idiotic.
The struggle never stops, save your energy for the battles you have to fight.

Yeah well, I am as anti bro science as you can get, but if there is one thing I am convinced of, it is that the human body is not a simple steam engine.
For example, you eat too much carbs, you get fat, you eat too much protein and your body justs ups your metabolism and body temperature and burns it off.
None of this exactly violates the laws of thermodynamics, but it makes a difference.
Of course, his patient could have been lying, grossly underestimating, we both don´t know.

Great Stuff, that's a gizmo I was not aware of. I'm sure this will help at least one person - which is worth the write up.
It has the potential to help a lot more because statistically speaking, if there are 160000 people and the people who have it are 3-7 %, if male and the members of this board are relatively young which should about half that number and that at least 80% are undiagnosed we arrive at the very least at 3800 guys who could benefit from this.
If I get a handful, it was worth my 15 minutes because I have leveled up my karma and will not be reborn as a cockroach.

Apnea it's not a joke, i had to wake my old man two times from apnea with the screams of my mother in the background. If you have some symptoms, get it checked, the worst thing that can happen to you is that you will have to wear a Air pressure mask to sleep (Guys over 60, it's rare to get big apneas sooner)

I'm a young guy and was diagnosed with sleep apnea 3 years ago. I'm in pretty decent shape as I lift and play a lot of hockey. The solutions they gave me included a machine that I have to strap to my face or a retainer. I chose the retainer and still felt like garbage ever since.
I gave up on the retainer. I still feel like shit waking up and considering I'm going to be teaching soon, I might go back and see if there's a new alternative to the machine.
I am afraid there is not.
Look, a CPAP machine does not nearly suck as much as you think it does and you will sleep like a baby.
It looks a bit shitty and ego and whatnot, but like in so many cases, your ego is your enemy.

Weight gain also lowers testosterone and raises estrogen levels, further complicating the problems.

Let me point out guys, like he said, there are other types.
There is Obstructive sleep apnea which is caused from what he explained and then there is Central sleep apnea which is caused by your brain basically shutting down and not sending the signals to your muscles to breathe.
I have the 2nd type. I am an avid runner, who is in decent shape. The thing is, unless someone points it out to you, you'll never know you had it.
Ironically, a ex-LTR pointed it out to me the first night she stayed the night with me. She said I would quit breathing in my sleep and when she'd push me, I'd start breathing again. The only signs I had personally:
I spent years feeling like shit all day.
I had high blood pressure even though I exercised(the Dr.'s chalked this up to being genetic, which now I think about, my father suffered the same thing but never knew it).
I would get up 3-4 times a night to use the bathroom(which is caused by your brain literally shocking your heart with adrenaline to wake you up)
When I took the sleep study, in the first 4 hours, I quit breathing around 160 times, the longest time was for 86 seconds. I went into REM zero times in those 4 hours. And my oxygen levels dropped into the 50's...all of which is border line for causing brain damage.
After I got the equipment, I never felt better.
Don't ever think, because you are not fat, you can't have it. If you suffer from bad sleep, get it checked ASAP.

I have sleep apnea, and while I'm quite heavy, I am definitely not fat (tren, etc.)
A friend in high school had sleep apnea. She was 5'3 and 110lbs.
It's not necessarily about weight.
If you can't focus, feel sleepy all the time, snore, wake up numerous times each night, and wake up with a headache, you should do a sleep study.
[–]1rporion[S] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
While I agree that you can get it at any weight, being fat makes it a lot more likely.
Now in your case I remember that Christian Thibadeau posted that beyond a certain weight he gets it and he is not fat by any means.
If you have a neck like a bull and those muscles relax during sleep they might as well be fat as far as your breathing is concerned.
[–]1whatsazipper 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Being fat makes it more likely to develop. It doesn't preclude its existence in people of healthy weight. Focusing on fat people is really a detriment to patients who are suffering but may not know what steps to take or investigate to resolve it.
To make matters worse, many medical professionals exhibit this logical failure. Being overweight is in no way, shape, or form required to develop obstructive sleep apnea; however, in people who don't have it, if they gain too much weight, they may develop it. And in those who already have it, additional fat gain makes it much worse.
[–]1rporion[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I am all on his side, if you sleep like shit, check that out.
Also, there are other forms where it is not about the obstruction, sooo....
My point was that they could not find one single person above a certain amount of visceral fat (200 -400 cubic centimeters ?) who did not have it.
After a certain amount it is simply a given.

I know. I wanted to emphasize it again for anyone reading. It might help someone. It's a serious condition that is under-treated.
